Review – Mission Chinese Food NYC (Grand Opening)

Chef Danny Bowien is quickly rising amongst the transplant Chef world, making his presence known with tons of media coverage. We picked up an issue of Bon Appetit to check out the latest ongoings in the food world. Low and behold, there’s Danny again headlining the magazine with Andrew Knowlton reflecting on their recent trip to eating up Chengdu. They even have a book out publishing their recipes. With much fanfare surrounding the opening, we wanted to satiate our need to know why the SF mainstay is much heralded…. Continue reading

Review – Empellon Cocina

Don’t believe the hype. It’s a sequel. -Public Enemy

Hyped by many as the young Rick Bayless of the East Coast, Chef Alex Stupak left as pastry chef of wd-50 to open Empellon Taqueria in the West Village. A few years later, he opened to rave reviews of what many consider to be a Mexican crown jewel in the East Village. We’re talking about none other than Empellon Cocina, taco free edition. After numerous recommendations by friends, we finally caved and paid them a visit… Continue reading

First Look – Atera

Credit proprietor Jodi Richard for hand-picking Chef Matt Lightner for Atera, the former the Compose space at 77 Worth St in TriBeCa. Even more props for convincing him to come to NYC from Portland. This guy is the real deal, having worked at the highly revered Mugaritz, and it shows. When it comes to textures, temperature, and technique, the execution is practically flawless. None of the food is coerced or phony. Even their butter is intentional. The flavors? Well, read on…

Review – ACME Restaurant and Bar

No, this is not a review of Cajun food, Po’ Boys and/or Hush Puppies. Instead, we are focusing on the newly reopened ACME with San Pellegrino’s #1 Restaurant in the World, Noma Co-Founder Mads Refslund a the helm. For the 2 smart people that read this blog, you will recall that we did an article on Mads, deemed the ‘other’ Golden Child,  last year. In case you didn’t here’s the Recap: 2011 Omnivore Professional Master Classes. We were no less impressed with the food this time around. Since the demo, we have been longing to fly to Denmark, but work beckons. Luckily, Mads came to us, and in strong form. I mean, just look at that picture. Continue reading

Heart Gallery NYC Volunteer Appreciation Dinner – Chef donation needed

Laurie’s doing God’s work! Please reach out if you can help donate food for a Volunteer Dinner! It’s all about Good Karma!  Contact Us

Thank you so much for your past support of the Heart Gallery.
The Heart Gallery is doing well, and we are closing up the Brooklyn Exhibit at Atlantic Terminal, where the recruitment table generated over 500 inquiries from prospective adoptive/foster families and mentors for the kids.

Our recruitment team@ Atlantic Terminal was made up of staff and loyal volunteers, and they did an amazing job!
We want to thank the team, especially the volunteers, for their dedication and hard work, and I was thinking about having them attend a special dinner, where we would acknowledge their support.

I was wondering if you knew of any restaurant, or caterer who might be interested in putting together a nice dinner for these wonderful folks. The number is around 20 people; our non profit budget is non existent to very small for this event, but this could be a good opportunity for an emerging chef/restaurant/caterer to gain recognition as we could acknowledge their support on our website, and on posters at our well trafficked venues throughout the five boroughs.

We could also acknowledge their support in our upcoming newsletter, which is distributed to over 5,000, and could offer professional photos of their dishes and the event for their websites/blogs or portfolios.

Please let me know if you have any ideas…

And thanks so much for your time and consideration!!!

Warmest regards,
Laurie

You guys ready for yet another PopUp Dinner? Well fasten your seat belts!

Thx to FoodandWine for this…

Guess who’s back in town for the summer: chef Ryan Skeen, who has thrilled people like me at—before walking away from—such NYC restaurants as Resto, Irving Mill, General Greene and Allen & Delancey, all in the span of 36 months.

Skeen’s new project, with The Restaurant Group, will be a pop-up restaurant at 10 Waverly Place. Starting July 13, Skeen will serve a $50 three-course prix fixe menu four nights a week (Wednesdays through Saturdays). There’s also the option of a chef’s tasting menu for $85 with as many courses as Skeen wants to serve—currently, he’s thinking about Jonah Crab and White Asparagus Soup, Quail with Figs and Smoked Potatoes, and Beignets with Foie Cardamom Custard.
