Event – Free Mister Softee and Body Chocolate by Babeland JUN29

Thx to NYStreetFood for this…

Mister Softee is not the first thing you want to associate with sex (although the logo above can look vaguely like a sex toy if you squint enough).

Despite the unfortunate connotation, the good folks at the Babeland sex shop and toy designer Jimmyjane will have a Mister Softee truck in front of their Soho and Brooklyn stores today – and the ice cream is free.

Not only is the ice cream free, but so is the edible body chocolate they are giving out to put on top of the ice cream!  They say it goes especially well with soft ice cream.

Event – Cooking Class w/ Top Chef Nikki Cascone (exp AUG6)

Located at the center of the traditionally Jewish immigrant neighborhood in the East Village-meets-Lower East Side, Octavia’s Porch serves up classic Jewish dishes with a fresh global twist. The objective of acclaimed chef Nikki Cascone — you may recognize her from 24 Prince and Bravo’s Top Chef — and The Printz Group at Octavia’s Porch is to celebrate the passing down of Jewish traditions through culture and food. This time around, you’re going to get a taste of the behind-the-scenes action. Enjoy the fruits of Cascone’s labor from start to finish, literally. Take a cooking class on the premise and watch as this kitchen ace shows you how to prepare and execute two Octavia’s Porch dishes. Past demos included shrimp and quinoa salad, seared wild Atlantic salmon with cucumber and cauliflower puree, and sesame ice cream with chocolate matzoh. The cuisine you’ll be schooled on not only draws from a Jewish heritage but from all corners of the world (Spain, Italy, Northern Africa, and South America). Don’t worry about mastering the meal the first time, as you’ll be provided with take-home recipe cards to play hostess-in-training at your next dinner party. If you’re planning to stay awhile, explore the menu and treat yourself (with $10 off your bill) to an evening at Octavia’s. One word to sum up this experience? Yum.

Event – Rolling in Dough or No? APR27

Brooklyn is home to every food business possible. Artisan pickles, jerky, cupcakes, kimchi, jam, chocolate, mustard–whatever the condiment or gourmet treat, someone here is attempting to perfect it. But how profitable is the artisan food business?

We’ve invited some of the most experienced specialty food entrepreneurs in Brooklyn–Anton Nocito from P&H Soda Co., Allison Robicelli of Robicelli’s, Kelly Geary of Sweet Deliverance NYC, Susan Povich of Red Hook Lobster Pound, Bob McClure of McClure’s Pickles, and Chris Parachini of Brooklyn Grange/Roberta’s–to tell aspiring artisan food moguls how hard it really is to pay the rent with small-batch food.

Rolling in Dough or No? is our third Business and Pleasure event, a series of freelancer-centric workshops and networking opportunities hosted by Brooklyn Brewery. Continue reading

Recipe – Chocogasm

Candy Cane Valrhona Hot Cocoa (2:1 Chocogasm ratio)

While we’re on the subject of Chocolate themed posts…

This recipe will satiate any sweet tooth. We had a hankering for something chocolatey last night so we whipped up this easy to make drink. Chocolate and mint go hand in hand, so we figured we’d throw in some candy cane, which is essentially what? Peppermint oil. Many recipes call for adding the liquid mixture into the melted chocolate last for added luster/sheen, but we find our method works just as well. Use Valrhona chocolate, only the best! We’re convinced that after trying our recipe, you’ll never drink Swiss Miss again! Continue reading

Recipes – Cookiegasm

Cookiegasm (L: VALRHONA COCONUT ALMOND COOKIE, R: WHITE CHOCO COCONUT MACADAMIA COOKIE)

Due to numerous requests, we have decided to publish our highly coveted Cookiegasm recipe. Cookiegasm, experienced when one reaches a euphoric state when consuming a cookie,  is not to be confused w/  Cookie Cookie, okay folks? Usually recipes online will tell you each batch makes X quantity, when in fact it makes 2X that amount. Don’t know if they are referring to Levain-sized softball cookies, but we’re not here. This recipe will give you a versatile option of adding your own FIXINS of choice. Our cookies yielded a nice soft chewy consistency but YMMV.

Taste Test: The $20 Chocolate Bar

After reading this article, I just had to have it. Pure white cacao beans, called Nacional, thought to be extinct and rediscovered in Peru. The resulting chocolate intense and fruity, with a “remarkable” lack of bitterness. It’s like something out of a movie–a long-lost treasure found on a jungle adventure. Who could resist?

Eatymology: Gianduja

Welcome to Eatymology, where I help myself (and like-minded dummies) build our menu and grocery store vocabulary.

I have a tree-nut allergy. It’s tragic – I’ll never be a real food critique; I’ll never know the joy of pesto, and upwards of 50% of commercial Halloween candy. As such, I’ve always fumbled futilely for a word to describe Non-Swiss European Chocolate – you know, the kind that’s inevitably laced with hazelnut, and hence, off-limits for me. Continue reading

Welcome Stephanie F. – our new Author

Welcome Stephanie! When Stephs not checking out the latest Cupcake place or watching Top Chef Desserts, she’s busy consuming the very same delectable delights. She brings a sweet tooth perspective from not only the front lines, but also from behind the kitchen. Carboholic Steph is not immune to the sinful pleasures of good pasta, as rumor has it she can inhale a ravioli through one nostril. To learn more about her, be sure to check out her Profile. Also, Steph’s Recommendations are up, including  her 5toTry monthly. Aloha, Steph!

Review – Jacques Torres Chocolate Haven

On December 20, 2010, I had the privilege of being invited to Jacques Torres’ 10th Anniversary Party. Did you know that Jacques Torres’ claim to fame was his lenghty tenure at the infamous Le Cirque, where he and current 3 Michelin Star Chef Daniel Boulud rose to stardom here in the US? In the early 90′s, when he demanded Sirio build out his pastry kitchen, it was unprecedented to hear of such audacity. Needless to say, hand in hand with Daniel, they ran the kitchen to infamy. Many celebrities (Gail SimmonsJeffrey Steingarten, etc) and dignitaries were on hand to witness this momentous occassion. A Proclamation was given to JT by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz for his handywork in the DUMBO location. Fast forward 10 years, JT is now the Dean of Pastry Arts for FCI and is the self-proclaimed Mr. Chocolate. If you want to shake hands with him, there’s no better time than at the Annual NY Chocolate Show. Continue reading
