How to do this, for cheap

Thx to ForkintheRoad for this…

The DIY movement has led to lots of great things–bacon jam, moonshining, Sam Mason’s artisanal mayonnaise. Er, right. But the homemade aesthetic has also gone beyond matters of taste. The New York Timesprofiles several crafty folks who have created innovations in machinery, including Scott Heimendinger, who created a $75 home sous vide cooker using off-the-shelf components.

Now, $75 is still a comparative bargain to $1200, but Fork in the Road can do you one better. Here’s the $1 sous vide method. Continue reading

Inspired by the culinary diversity of NYC, Txikito will simulate a miniature street festival with global street cuisine.  2011 will highlight Txakoli: a effervescent low alcohol white wine from the Basque Region which is issued each spring. It is our hope that over time Txikifest will be an annual Txakoli restaurant mash-up for Charity.

What to expect: More than 10 Txacolis and 1 cider from the Basque region.  Also on hand, 9 terrific restaurants preparing gourmet street food.  Joining us will be our neighbors Co. Pizzeria, Edi and the Wolf, El Quinto Pino, La Newyorkina, Lassi (Heather Carlucci), Poole’s Diner, Taim & Taim Mobile, The Hurricane Club, and Txikito.

Event – 5th Annual NY Date Auction for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society MAY4-9

Nina C and Joolz do a wonderful job every year hosting this event to raise money for a good cause. All in good fun, it doesn’t matter if you’re single or not. It’s all about making new friends and hanging out. Whether you’re a bidder or being bidded on, it’s all gravy! This is a UYE, or Unofficial Yelp Event.

Nina C. says:

It’s about that time and I’m putting a call out for volunteers once again for…

The Annual NY Date Auction to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

Every year, the auction brings a week of non-stop fun to Yelpland. It brings out the generosity in people, their competitive spirit and the person inside all of us that just loves to have fun while helping others.

So, with that said, we’re looking for this year’s volunteers to be on the auction block. Please note that to be on the auction block, you MUST have a picture of yourself AND at least ten reviews up! You’d also be joining the list of illustrious auction alums.  Even yours truly was once on the auction block!

Event – Fukucho Night @ Sakagura MAY6

Sakagura cordially invites you to  “FUKUCHO NIGHT”!

Fukucho brewery (http://fukucho.info/?mode=f6) was founded in the first year of the Meiji Restoration, 1868, in Akitsu in Hiroshima Prefecture. Akitsu has the oldest sake-brewing history in Hiroshima, stretching back 400 years. Akitsu, which faces the Inland Sea and has a population of about 13,000 people, once had 17 sake breweries, but now there are only three. Hiroshima, however, is still one of the most significant sake-brewing regions in Japan, and is consistently among the top six prefectures nationwide in terms of annual sake production. Historically, the prefecture has always won many awards for its sake, and on occasion has even swept the top three awards in the country. The sake we brew here at Imada Shuzo, called Fukucho, is very representative of this great Hiroshima style. Continue reading
