Review – Toloache Taqueria (FiDi)

UPDATE: Think people don’t read our blog? Think again. Chef Medina responds within an hour.

$2 Taco Tuesdays Sign, 3 tacos $6 (puerco, pollo, hongos)

When a restaurant expands, quality usually suffers. Toloache falls victim, just like its predecessors. Although this grab and go location is ideal for corporate customers, it doesn’t have the same wow factor as its competitors. Namely, Pinche and La Esquina. Here they fall victim to soggy bottoms. We’re talking a one block walk back to the office here, folks. It’s a shame, since the tortilla shells have a great masa flavor. Toloache, we highly recommend foil wrapping take out tacos. We’ve already been here twice. Once upon opening a few months back, and today for their $2 Taco Tuesdays. In 2008, we attended their $1 Tacos in celebration of their 1YR Anniversary at their flagship location.

Our favorite of the bunch is unequivocally the Puerco, or Mexican chocolate glazed pork w/ chipotle cabbage slaw. The pork is melty and most importantly, you taste the love in this taco. The slaw gives the protein a nice balance with the crunch while neutral in flavor. Chipotle adds a subtle, but much needed kick. We also saw premade tortas, or sandwiches, there but they did not look too impressive. In fact, nothing else we tasted was worthy of mention, besides the 3rd party drink. More on that later.
THE VERDICT: 3/5 stars

Taco Menu, Take Out Bag

$2 Tacos is a good idea for showcasing value, especially on a slow day like today. We honestly wouldn’t have returned otherwise.  Why does cheap or free food always taste so much better? Our verdict? The fish? Shredded. The burrito and other tacos? Generic. The silver lining? Tax is included. Plus, they have cute orange take out bags. By the way, if you get a chance, definitely guzzle down a a grapefruit Jarritos, or Mexican soda (~$2). Life will never be the same. Do yourself a favor and order 3 Puercos and a Grapefruit Jarritos, or nothing.

P.S. As with any deal, you want to get there on time. We got there at 12pm on the dot and were already the 10th in line.
